Green turtle population in Rangaunu Harbour - DOC

Postby Michael Szabo » Sat Oct 01, 2011 6:21 pm

According to this DOC media release, New Zealand has a population of green turtles in Rangaunu Harbour in the Far North: http://www.doc.govt.nz/about-doc/news/m ... tion-week/

DOC also issued a media release last week on the increased number of marine turtle strandings reported this year:
http://www.doc.govt.nz/about-doc/news/m ... e-turtles/

I saw a large marine turtle from the Paua wharf in Parengarenga harbour last summer and someone I know saw one from their boat near Mana Island last summer. So it's probably worth keeping an eye out for marine turtles during the coming months, on the coast and at sea during pelagics.

DOC is urging anyone who sees a marine turtle, whether alive or dead, to contact their local DOC office as soon as possible, or to call the 24 hour emergency line 0800 DOC HOTline (0800 362 468).

Happy wildlife watching!
