Although it doesn't say in the article I believe introduced wasps are the main culprit - specially in the honey dew beech forests where they basically eat everything!! I suspect these butterflies are only the tip of the iceberg....
Hopefully there will be populations in captivity that maybe one day can be used to re-populate areas if they can ever get on top of wasp numbers.
