Shearwater split

Postby Neil Fitzgerald » Fri Dec 16, 2016 12:59 pm

I'm obviously a couple of years behind, but I've just realised that Puffinus was split in the del Hoyo and Collar (2014) checklist. Seven species are now placed in Ardenna. I haven't seen any discussion of it here yet, so maybe it passed others by too. It seems most international lists are using this new classification, but not NZBO, which makes me wonder if there is some disagreement with NZ experts.
The seven Ardenna species are:
Wedge-tailed Shearwater Ardenna pacifica
Buller's Shearwater Ardenna bulleri
Flesh-footed Shearwater Ardenna carneipes
Pink-footed Shearwater Ardenna creatopus
Great Shearwater Ardenna gravis
Sooty Shearwater Ardenna grisea
Short-tailed Shearwater Ardenna tenuirostris

Interesting genus name. I wonder what it refers to?
