13 hours in Fiji

Postby Jill » Sun Nov 23, 2014 7:35 am

Hi NZ Birders,

I have a 13 hour layover at Nadi Airport in Fiji in a couple of weeks. Is there anywhere nearby, that is easily to accessed and safe, that anyone can suggest/recommend for bird watching? Thanks.

The travel is probably long since passed however the information may be useful for other visitors.
There are a few locations close to Nadi that are worthwhile. Top of the list would be the Garden of the Sleeping Giant. Its about 10km north of Nadi and you are probably best to take a taxi. The alternative is to take a local bus travelling to Lautoka and ask the driver to let you know where to get off. Its a walk up an unsealed road for about 3km to the Garden but you are likely to see the Fiji Woodswallow, White Collared Kingfisher, Harrier and Goshawk on the walk up. The garden has spectacular orchid displays but it is in the established forest area where you are more likely to see a range of forest birds.
Just south of the airport Wailoaloa Road has been reliable for the Fiji Parrotfinch.
Port Denarau seems to attract Herons, Terns and other seabirds and if time permitted you could try a boat trip from there.
