Bribie Island and Toorbul Queensland

Postby Mike Vincent » Tue Mar 15, 2016 8:00 pm

After working in Brisbane last week I got the chance to do some birding at Toorbul and Bribie Island. As usual there were plenty of birds with lost I could not identify. I had two trips to Buckleys Hole on Bribie on at the end of the day and other at dawn. The birds were pretty much the same on both occasions except for a pair of Rajah Shelducks late afternoon and Japanese Snipe in the morning. The other birds consistent to both visits were:
Magpie Geese
Grey Duck
White heron
Intermediate Egret
Nanken Night Heron
Glossy Ibis
Pied Stilt
Comb Crested Jacana
Pied butcher bird
Magpie lark
Welcome swallow
Little correla
Wander whistling duck
Pied shag
Black shag
Galah
Torresian crow
Also a green tree snake and I crossed paths
I went to both the Toorbul and Banksia Beach wader roosts for a morning high tides. Toorbu was good as the birds were very close to the shore and included
Black swan
Australian pelican
Intermediate egret
Whistling kite
Pied stilt
Sooty oyster catcher
Spur wing plover
Marsh sandpiper
Whimbrel (52)
Bar tailed godwit
Great knot
Forest kingfisher
Kookaburra
Crimson rosella
Magpie lark
Ibis
The Banksia (Kakadu roost) had similar birds but was notable for
Mongolian Sand Plover (41)
Far Eastern Curlew (40)
Red Stint
Beach thick knees (3)
Osprey (1)
The trip was topped off when I spotted a White Bellied Sea Eagle near the airport. If you are in Brisbane you can get to these places easily.

Interesting. I hope to see some of those birds when I visit there in a few weeks!

Hi Amber

Also try the Boondal wetlands early morning or late afternoon. I have always seen tawny owls here. Also it is handy to the airport. Good luck.

That spot looks interesting, I assume you are referring to the Grass Owls? I'll certainly have a look if I can!
