The September issue of Bird New Zealand magazine has been published with a cover photo of a South Island Takahē by Southland member Glenda Rees. This issue contains illustrated reports on our 2023 annual conference and AGM, ten years of the Birds New Zealand Research Fund (BNZRF), and the results of the 2022 national wader census.

The AGM report lists our 2023 award winners and includes the citation for the Robert Falla Memorial Award, which was presented to Elizabeth ‘Biz’ Bell for her distinguished service to Birds New Zealand.

The BNZRF report describes how, over the ten years since 2013, Birds New Zealand has awarded funding to 140 bird research projects focusing on more than 40 NZ bird species, 30 of which are threatened species, including various penguin, kiwi and albatross species as well as Kākāpō, Takahē and Tarāpuka Black-billed Gull. Over that time a total of 105 research projects received funding from the BNZRF and 35 projects from our Projects Assistance Fund (PAF). Birds New Zealand administers the BNZRF, which awards funds generously donated by the T-Gear Charitable Trust, while the PAF is funded from the annual subscriptions and donations of members.

This issue also includes news reports marking the 75th anniversary of the rediscovery of the Takahē in 1948, the return of Kākāpō to the mainland at Maungatautari for the first time in nearly four decades, the loss of 40-50 Southern NZ Dotterels on Rakiura Stewart Island, and news of a newly described extinct species of penguin from fossils found in South Taranaki that supports a New Zealand origin for the Kororā Little Penguin (rather than an Australian origin).

There are also illustrated reports on our New Zealand Bird Atlas project by the Atlas project team, and our April/May 2023 NZ Bird Atlas expedition in Northland (supported by Toi Toi Wines) by Auckland Regional Representative Ian McLean, and an illustrated feature article on a birdwatching trip to the Solomon Islands by Birds New Zealand President Bruce McKinlay with photographs by Lars Petersson.

There are also quarterly reports from our President Bruce McKinlay and Regional Roundups from our regional representatives, and the bi-annual Bird News report on unusual and interesting bird sightings from around the country over the previous six months.
