Strakas Refuge - Waiwera

Postby chambers » Tue Jul 21, 2009 4:16 pm

Strakas Refuge - Waiwera - North Auckland - This is just past the sewage ponds on Weranui Road for those who don't know the area. It can be viewed from the gateway at the new bridge end. The land here is owned by Colin Wech. He is agreeable to entry if permission is sought. However the lake can be easily viewed from the gate especially if you take loppers and remove a few coprosma branches.
On 21.7.09 there were 9 dabchicks there plus many Grey Teal, a few shovelers, grey duck, Paradise Shelduck and Black Swans. Not the usual number of waterfowl but the dabchicks were worth the visit. No Chestnut Teal.
Talking Chestnut Teal - when in Australia the rule is that you separate a female Chestnut Teal from a Grey teal by the colour of its mate.
Banded Rail - for those looking for these at Wenderholm check before going there. The park has been closed for pest eradication.
