Bellbird in NW Christchurch

Postby Ian Mc » Tue Jul 28, 2009 1:12 pm

Bellbirds appear to be spreading widely in Christchurch.
One was singing loudly this morning on the cnr of Highsted Road and Styx Mill Road in a tall tree.
Here is a picture of this bird.

Nice photo. They've been in that part of Christchurch for a few years now. 2-3 frequented the City Council nursery on Gardiners Road when the OSNZ tried banding there. Must be about 4 years ago. There can't be many parts of the city without Bellbirds at least passing through - a welcome sound and sight (but a pity they don't seem to hang around in Ilam/Avonhead where I live), and almost certainly helped by the City Council's work in the Port Hills and the City.

Thanks Nick
I've also heard them around QE2 park.
