- Through 26-29th April, Christchurch City will host the one Australasian entry in the iNaturalist City Nature Challenge (https://inaturalist.nz/projects/city-na ... ristchurch ).
- San Francisco won this event in 2018, with 3211 species recorded in 4 days. We know through iNaturalist NZ – Mātaki Taiao that there are many more than 5000 species of plants, animals & fungi in greater Ōtautahi-Christchurch (includes Banks Peninsula); while our National Parks report around 2-3000 species.
- This long weekend event, based at Canterbury WEA, Travis Wetland Education Centre, & Orana Park will feature:
- iNaturalist NZ start-up workshops (loading app, making records, accessing & reporting data);
- expert-led expeditions to dozens of biodiversity hotspots;
- public forums on CHCH natural & cultural history;
- ‘experts at work’ identifying collections & photos;
- family-friendly activities with prizes;
- socialising & forming regional support groups for local education & fun field excursions (working with existing natural history field clubs);
and likely a special applications hackathon;
- This Nature Challenge at end of April will be a launching pad for raised awareness of ‘nature in cities’ - joining up with a wider global movement.
