Australian Little Grebe

Adult bird seen tonight on a pond in Upper Moutere,( Kelling rd) after a tip of from local birders. First seen on the 25th Nov.
Pond visible from the rd. A really good bird for South island.

Still there today, playing hide and seek. Most of the time out of sight, diving for long periods not knowing where it would surface. Apparently first South Island record since 2012.

Hi Bernd, there have been a few sightings in the South Island since 2012. Single birds at St Annes Lagoon and Takaka in 2018 and Lake Benmore in 2020. Cheers!

Still there yesterday showing very well on the edge of the willows. Will put a distant photo up tomorrow.

No sighting of the little grebe yesterday afternoon, I met three other birders trying for it too. Keen to hear if sighted again, cheers
