There were 24 shore plovers on the rocks there today around midday and I counted 6 beach wrecked broad-billed prions on the adjacent area of beach.
Happy birding!

We had a look behind the Plimmerton fire station today (and adjacent areas) but could find only 4 shore plovers. Does anyone know what has happened to all the other shore plovers that used to be at Plimmerton?

Seems they've gone back to Mana Island. Best place for them, but good to know there are still a few around for the public to see.

Re: Shore Plovers at Plimmerton
Delia Small and I called in to Plimmerton on the way back from Kapiti Island bird counts late today, and saw no shore plover. We met Sue Freitag and Barry Dent there (who regularly monitor shore plover on Mana Island), who had also found none. They had just been told by Sue Caldwell (DOC ranger on Mana Island) that 32 shore plover were on Mana Island today. They have been moving between Plimmerton and Mana Island regularly over the last fortnight.

That's interesting information David and Colin, thanks for that. At one stage, it was suggested that the shore plovers on Mana Island might be caged in some way to prevent them from leaving the island, is this going to be done? If there are only 32 shore plover on Mana Island now, compared with about 50 previously, I guess this means there are several that are unaccounted for, which would be a shame.

Quite a few birds there over the last few days; between 25-30. One sign has been put up by Plimmerton Residents Association re having dogs on that stretch of waterfront but more are needed as there were two people walking dogs there this morning, one in particular off the leash.

I counted 32 on the beach at full high tide yesterday and there were at least 20 there this morning.

We visited there today (Tuesday 9 August) and counted 24 birds. We are very pleased to see the sign that has been up, as shown in this photo:
Here is a picture I took today:

Re: Shore Plovers at Plimmerton
We visited Plimmerton at midday on 14 September and looked for the shore plovers in the fire station area. However, we could find only one. This bird had yellow (top) and green (bottom) bands on the left leg and orange and blue bands on the right leg. The day before our visit, the Wellington district experienced heavy hailstorms and thunderstorms, so we wondered if the birds may have temporarily returned to Mana Island?
On a previous visit on 3 September, we saw about 20 shore plovers at Plimmerton, so we are wondering if anyone may know what has happened to them since that date?
Thanks

Re: Shore Plovers at Plimmerton
Not sure if more have been seen since the last post but I popped out to have a look today and only found 1 plover around midday. It was a different one than last time white/yellow (left) and green/blue (right).
