Galah

Postby Grahame » Sat Jun 10, 2017 4:55 pm

I have just heard from Paul G that there are 13 Galah came in to roost at 1630 in trees behind the Castle Café in Mangatawhiri. No trace of the Australian Shelduck at Miranda all day.

There were 14 Galahs in a newly sown field on the corner of Lyon rd and Mangatawhiri rd at 3.15 pm yesterday. 5 minutes later they were roosting in a kahikatea grove just N W of that field , then later feeding, along with 100s of sparrows and finches in a maize stubble field slightly to the north and visible from the Lyon rd bridge.

Steps is right there is and old thread on this. These birds turn up in this area most winters

A--all or nearly all reports have been in June, July or August over the last 10 to 15 years
B--all or nearly all reports have been within a 1km radius of the intersection described above

I find the latter interesting, there are heaps of stubble fields in the south auckland region but these birds are very site faithful to this particular site

As per previous reports the birds were/are (as of 3:45 today) roosting and cavorting in the trees behind the castle cafe. They seem to like the dead pines and roost As a flock making quite a racket. They weren't feeding on the stubble when I arrived just roosting possibly due to the terrible weather.

Will attach photos when I arrive home.

Edit: birds flew off shortly before 4pm and were unable to be relocated in any of the nearby trees or paddocks. We're 12-13 individuals

Had excellent views of 21 Galah yesterday at 3pm on the 2 stubble fields on the intersection of Lyons Road and Mangatawhiri Road. Watched them actively feeding on the corn remains, sitting in the trees behind the fields and the whole flock regularly flying and swooping (along with hundreds / thousands of other passerines, mynas, rock pigeons and turtle doves) trying to avoid the 3 harriers that were regularly quartering the 2 fields. A fantastic sight seeing so many land birds in flight en mass circling around the fields – was a bit like watching the shorebirds at Miranda in flight.

Also got to see the Northern Shoveler at Miranda on Saturday.

Cheers Scott

A couple of years ago they were using a stand of old macrocarpa next to stone quarry on Kaiaua rd as a night roost. Have not checked recently.
