Possible Fairy Tern, Nelson Haven

Postby andrewcrossland » Sun May 23, 2021 10:33 pm

Scott Butcher from Nelson City Council reports a possible Fairy Tern on Nelson Haven today opposite the Wakapuaka Sewage Treatment wetlands, close to Boulder Bank Drive. He describes it as a small tern, very pale with lots of yellow on its bill -obviously a Fairy or Little. Just a request for local birders to keep an eye out and gte a photo to confirm an ID if possible.

Scott is very familiar with little tern from a lot of experience with them overseas and says his gut feeling is that this potentially a Fairy - which would be a pretty notable record on the south side of Cook Strait so hopefully it’ll be refound and scrutinised closer?

I hope to find time to go there and if it is there take some photos. I am quite busy so it may have to wait til Saturday. Might be a longshot.
