Re: Wellington City biodiversity
At Midland Park, Lambton Quay on Saturday, watched sparrows drinking nectar from the kōwhai trees like small unexciting fake bellbirds. Didn't realise that they did that.

Walking home from work, I saw a Falcon launch from a pohutakawa tree by Calabar Rd, Miramar, near the airport runway. It flew low over the houses towards the Miramar shops.

Oh dear! It should stay away from the airport runway.

Not bang smack in the city, but still an interesting sighting...
Some of my friends and I happened upon a super chilled out Kārearea in Zealandia, looks like a juvie male.
It happily sat on the fence about a meter away from this large crowd, until a tourist walked straight in front and spooked it off

That first photo is phenomenal, such a slam dunk to get a cooperative kārearea!

Alan Tennyson & I observed a kereru from our office window this morning, flying over Pukeahu War Memorial Park. They are a rare bird over this side of the city.

Another falcon sighting from home this morning (Mt Cook, Wellington). Probably the same young male seen several times over the past 2 months. We usually see an average of one per year from home, but this is the fifth sighting this year (one of an adult pair), plus two sightings from or near work (1 km away).
Cheers
Colin
PS - and seen again from work late afternoon!

Anyone know this dunnock? Has a band: https://i.imgur.com/ajUn8u2.jpg - photo along the Zealandia fencline.
In other Karori news, loads of kākā around Karori today. Three at the bus stop near my flat, another one at Gipps Street, then at least a dozen (with up to 10 flying together) around the fenceline at Wrights hill. https://imgur.com/a/VUNNf

Re: Wellington City biodiversity
Could well have been me who banded it, haha.
There's a passerine banding group in Wellington - we set up mist nets and basically catch any passerines that we manage to catch, incl Dunnocks. So my money's on the fact that one of us banded it...

Another 'office window' falcon sighting this afternoon (5th since July). Charly Bost and I watched one (possibly the same immature male) stoop at a flock of little black shags departing the Zealandia roost on 3 Oct. Zealandia is approx. 2 km from my office at top of Tory St.
