George Hobson wrote:Could well have been me who banded it, haha.
There's a passerine banding group in Wellington - we set up mist nets and basically catch any passerines that we manage to catch, incl Dunnocks. So my money's on the fact that one of us banded it...

Hi George
What is the purpose of the banding? I know there has been interest in banding in other parts of the county but without purpose so they can be difficult to justify.

NZ Falcon spotted gliding around in circles high above Zealandia. Male doing breeding display? Or do Falcon's sometime hunt like a Harrier?

Lots of Song Thrushes around at the moment, and a pair of Kaka in the large trees behind 17 Awarua St opposite the Awarua St railway station. We now have NZ Pigeon sitting on the coax cable outside our house near our balcony. Great views of the Pigeon, but their droppings go all over the bonnet of our car below!

Otari-Wilton Bush sightings

Postby Michael Szabo » Sat Oct 28, 2017 5:25 pm

There was a New Zealand Falcon at Otari-Wilton Bush today. I saw it 3 times between 10.30am and 2.30pm, circling overhead above the school, over the picnic ground, and over the car park. Each time I saw it I heard it calling first. Other species noted were Tui (20), Kereru (10), Kaka (10) and Kakariki (7), Shining Cuckoo (4), Sacred Kingfisher (2), a pair of Paradise Shelducks, and a Bellbird. I think I also heard a Saddleback up the valley that runs north-west from the picnic area.

Here's a clip of a Kaka foraging on the ground at the Otari Wilton Bush Reserve that I filmed recently:

No evidence of nesting, but walking along the fenceline to Wright Hill still has Robins, Saddlebacks, Kākā all in the bush. Had a very good time observing a single saddleback debugging a section of bush.

Also spotted an NZ Falcon going from Zealandia to Wright Hill.

No Cuckoo chicks seen or heard yet.
