Recently I've stumbled across a couple pairs of red-crowned kākāriki where I wasn't expecting to see any.

The first was on the track near Table Hut, in from Otaki Forks.
Second was this weekend, at the southern end of the Big Bend Track in the Orongorongo Valley.

A fantail right in the central city today. It was on Victoria Street early morning in a linden tree at the corner of Bond St.

I saw a Falcon at this exact location yesterday. It had caught a bird and flew down the hill. Sadly no good photo's.

ledzep wrote:A pair of Falcons today sitting on a bare tree branch on the Belmont Trig Bridleway. Both appeared to be adult birds. Both flew off, but returned to the tree later so it may be a favourite vantage point. GPS 174.865634 -41.191401. Also some Whiteheads in a bush with Silvereyes about 100 metres further up. Whiteheads and Bellbirds calling from near Belmont Trig.

Walking up the west side of the fence from Karori over to Pariwhero / Red Rocks (to find geckos and commune with the Pipits), spotted a Peacock that got itself inside the fence and clearly was looking for a way out.

I hate to be that person with the blurry photos, but looking at a couple of photos from the end of the day at Pariwhero / Red Rocks, are these just Caspian terns or something more interesting? Looks like red/orange bill, black head, long neck

Similarly, together with a couple hundred White-fronted terns, there were a few on the taller rock that looked a little different (is there a technical term for tern-based wishful thinking?)

Today I didn't see the whale, but it was fantastic to see a large number of Fluttering Shearwaters/pakahā right up at the waterfront by Whairepo Lagoon and the Boatshed. Unfortunately I had naught but my subpar cellphone camera with me:

I was at Shelly Bay wharf yesterday morning. A Falcon flew low over the wharves, pursued by several Black-backed Gulls. It called loudly then disappeared over the bush above Shelly Bay.

A falcon flew across the top of Tory St (Pukeahu War Memorial Park) at dusk on 14 July (silhouette only).
Cheers

Saw a flock of 6 kakariki flying overhead near the Otari-Wilton bush car park on July 14. Biggest flock I've seen outside of Zealndia.

Also saw a NZ falcon on the skyline walkway on the same day.

Myself and a couple of other young birders had a Hutton's Shearwater off the eastbywest ferry between Matiu/Somes and Queens Wharf yesterday.
Good views eliminated Fluttering due to the smokey underwing and no white saddlebags.

A pair of Whitehead about 200 m from the Cornish St entrance to Belmont Regional Park at Korokoro, near where the iron fence is across the stream. A pair of Pukeko in the same area, as well as Grey Warbler and NZ Pigeon. One or two Bellbirds on the track up to Korokoro Dam.
