Whakatane sightings

Postby erikforsyth » Sun Jan 06, 2019 8:45 pm

walked from Burma Road to White Horse Drive from 0730 -0830am, which is the area where Ohope Nature Reserve and Mokorua Bush join up. Recorded 7 Tomtits in song and a resident pair of NI Robins were seen.

A big well up of Kowhai off Ohope Beach late this afternoon brought in hundreds of Fluttering Shearwaters and 50 odd Australasian Gannets. Interestingly, at least 4 Parasitic(Arctic Skua) Jaegers were seen chasing the many White-fronted Terns that were also feeding. There were also a few dark brown shearwaters out there, possibly Flesh-footed

Happy New Year Erik,
That is a nice bit of bush up there. I dropped in with some friends not long ago on the way back from Ohiwa and heard three Kiwi from the track. One very close to the car park.
All the best
Tim
