Gannet Colony

Postby Gavin Klee » Fri Dec 01, 2017 7:18 am

Walking along Paraparaumu Beach this morning I saw at least 10 Gannets patrolling up and down the shoreline. Normally see one or two but never ten. Would this be as a result of the work done on Mana Island a few years ago?

Hi Gavin

Unfortunately Mana Island can't claim credit for your flock. There is one presumed male gannet (Nigel-no-mates) that regularly hangs out among the concrete decoys, intermittently bonking the more receptive ones. And an occasional second bird has visited, presumed to be the same sex as Nigel (they have not been seen interacting). But no burgeoning yet.

I took the following image in November 2015.

Cheers
Colin

Thanks Colin
OMG ...all a bit sad really. I must take a walk along the coastline south of Pukerua Bay and see if there is any signs there.
