21 Days around NZ - the last part.

Postby sav » Tue Dec 12, 2017 6:04 pm

Hi all,

I have just finished a 21-day round trip throughout NZ. See a similar topic for the first 2 weeks.

The last week highlights were:
Okarito Kiwi with Ian Cooper. A frustrating night with one bird seen early, and briefly, in the half-light. 5 different birds heard calling.
Fiordland Crested Penguin at Munro Beach.
4 Yellowheads (2 pairs) at Haast Pass.
A pair of Rock Wrens attending a nest near Homer Tunnel.
Wonderful views of a Black-fronted Tern colony in the Eglinton Valley.
Everything except kiwi on Ulva.
Southern Brown Kiwi at Ocean Beach.
A really interesting pelagic off Stewart with: 3 Grey-backed and one Black-bellied Storm-petrel. Only one Mottled Petrel but 50+ Cook's. A Pomarine Skua. Fantastic looks at a family of 3 FC Penguins. 4 Yellow-eyed Penguins on Bench Is. One Broad-billed Prion.
6 adult Black Stilts at 2 sites near Lake Tekapo, and 5 or 6 immatures at Glentanner.
The White-winged Black Tern at Cass River.
And finishing up with mega views of Wrybill in their breeding habitat - how appropriate!!

Trip list 155 species.

After the tour, I saw the Black Kite at Renwick this afternoon.

cheers
