White-naped Petrel off Kaikoura

Postby sav » Fri Jan 05, 2018 5:06 pm

Hi all,

Gaz Melville photographed a White-naped Petrel from the Albatross Encounters boat today. Hopefully the pics will be on their Facebook page soon.

The species is extremely rare off the NZ mainland, and I think there might be only one other South Island record (and that was off Stewart).

What else is out there?

cheers

Argh!!!! Here’s hoping we get across on the ferry tomorrow, so will post a report of what I see if we do. But it’s looking very rough out there.

What a fantastic report, good old Gaz always seems to find the odd brilliant bird. I guess it helps being out there all the time!

We found a beach-wrecked one at Kairaki beach near the mouth of the Waimakariri many years ago. I think Sco had it as a Juan Fernandez Petrel but he may have changed his mind by now? I can look up the date if anyone's interested.
