Several observers have reported a Red-capped Dotterel at Miranda, seen well on 9 jan with other small waders 25m in front of the original hide at the shell banks (wrybill hide). So just a heads up for folks to keep a look out for it and get photos if you can.

Although several groups have searched, it has not been seen since this day.

Why has it taken so long to be reported?

The bird was seen, briefly, on 9th January by four observers, but due to misleading information about weight, size and colour, in available literature at the time, was incorrectly identified as an (very unlikely) Kentish. The correct identification was only realised that evening as Red-capped Dotterel after research in several books and the net. The bird was searched for by all four people over the following six days, but never seen again, hence no news put out nationally. I believe a UBR has been submitted.

Apparently the UBR has been accepted, so a red-capped plover was now officially at Miranda in January. This is the first in NZ since 1981, and since 1968 at Miranda.
Thanks to Paul G for passing this on.
