It's amazing how often one rare bird follows another. .....

Observer effort has gone up following recent sightings there, I suspect.

Anything to support the theory it’s just one bird moving around?

Hey Oscar,
Nothing to support that theory except the fact that all this Summer's birds have looked exactly the same. I think there has most likely only been one Whiskered Tern here.
cheers

Lisa and I arrived at the wharf around noon today but no sign. Launched the kayak and paddled out to the gull colony at the Tongariro River delta and BINGO! Got it. Stayed there for about an hour without moving much. Was still there when we paddled back. So I guess it's worth bringing a watercraft if you can (just in case). Around 180 Black-billed Gull chicks at the colony.

the whiskered tern also was spending quite a bit of time roosting on the polls near the entrance into the boat harbour and it seems when the roost were full and it was on this side of the rivermouth it would roost on the whaft.
