Black petrel, in Otorohanga
Just had a call about a black petrel that was discovered at a quarry company office in Otorohanga this morning. I assume the ID is correct. It is banded, so tracing that back will be interesting. It's in care at the moment and going to Wildbase tomorrow.

Have seen photos and with weight of 710g I think they have the ID correct.
A correction on the location it was recovered; the quarry is a bit south of Otorohanga (actually nearer Te Kuiti).

This bird was banded by Samantha Ray and I on the 4th May, on Mt Hobson, Great Barrier Island.
We banded it while it was still a downy chick in its natal burrow, so it’s good to see that it fledged from the island successfully, though shame about it coming a cropper near Otorohanga.
This bird seems to have become a bit geographically-challenged: we’re satellite tracking 14 black petrel chicks at the moment - and the majority of them are heading near due east, following remarkably-similar tracks out into the Pacific. These birds have all left GBI over the past fortnight, and the frontrunners are already about 3000km east of NZ, or roughly a third of the way across the Pacific!
So Otorohanga definitely shouldn’t be on any black-petrel’s itinerary... The latest update about this bird is that it’s now at Wildbase, being treated for dehydration and some minor ulcers on its feet. Once it’s gained condition and waterproofed its feathers, it’ll be driven to Napier for release out in Hawke Bay, hopefully sometime during the coming week.
