Fairy prion in Karori, Wellington

Postby kimbirdley » Tue May 29, 2018 10:48 am

My friend found this dead prion in Karori, Wellington. What are the chances that they are breeding on the mainland in Wellington?

Also keen for some help with I.D. as my prion knowledge isn't great. Do we think it's likely to be a fairy prion?

Looks like a Salvin's Prion, maybe Antarctic. Bill is not massive enough for a Broad-billed Prion. Can't see enough detail at the base of the bill to be totally sure.

It's come in off the sea and won't be breeding locally.

Some more images have been added to this record. Going by the last photo (dark bill with slightly bowed sides) I'd go with Salvin's as well.

The new photos show the bill from above.
