Saw it today with Ian Southey & others at 8pm after a long drive from Auckland. Took some finding but good view near where stated. We will be back down there at the crake of dawn.

Edit: still there this morning, a new photo taken:

May the crake of dawn be a Marsh Crake

Lovely bit of film , Duncan. Is that on your phone? It behaves like a Jacana on that weed. No doubt the same weed that Chch inhabitants blame for the evil pong later in the summer in the Avon estuary. I do like Phalaropes.

Just keep the thing there for long enough so that some of us south islanders can get some grab-a-seats or drive the long way round to picton!

Only just seen this thread (I'm in the UK at the moment), but thought this was a Wilson's after the first Photo! The species has a classic "pot-bellied" shape quite unlike any Marsh Sandpiper. I have seen many Wilson's Phalarope, in all plumages, in the UK and the shape is always very noticeable. Surprised the wader experts didn't pick up on this!!!

It was showing very well yesterday (Sun) morning around 10am - watched it for about half an hour or so; looked like it was catching insects off the weed. Got some good photos but too technically challenged to upload sorry. In the prescribed spot just west of the bridge from the cycleway.

I had a couple of days viewing the bird yesterday and today in the usual spots. I am loving learning about the various birds of the world and their different characteristics. this bird has been very accomadating.

Nice video Ledzep and photo Rukuhia. This was a lifer for me and I was fascinated by its delicate and slo-mo stalking. Having seen plenty of clockwork red-necks, this came as quite a surprise. We missed your expertise Phil.
Cheers
Tim
