Here's a clip of a South Island Takahe swimming that I recorded at the Zealandia Ecosanctuary recently:

What is known about Takahē swimming ability? I took this photo of the same last weekend, regularly doing the paddle across this open stretch of water (only 10-15m)

Maybe they haven't entirely become land birds and given the opportunity, will take to the water like pukekos?

Another falcon sighting from my office window at 1:30 pm today.

Tui alarm calling alerted me to a loose flock of tui milling about over pohutukawa trees about 100 m away (sthn end of Tasman St), from which an adult falcon emerged and flew down Tory St, within 30 m from where I am seated.

Cheers

The start of the Old Coach Road entrance to Belmont Regional Park (end of Normandale Road) is a good spot for Pipits at the moment. At least 5 just by the gate entrance to the farmland a few hundred metres from the carpark, and more Pipits in the area.

We had a late afternoon walk up Mt Albert on Boxing Day and a falcon flew over our heads and straight down into the valley beside us. I've occasionally seen a falcon up there before. This one was dark and probably male being not that large.

Walking on Tinakori Hill today on one of the lesser used tracks and came across 5 Kaka's sitting quietly in the trees, GPS 174.775651 -41.268611. A little later in Botanic Gardens on the small track about 50 metres north of Garden Road intersection with Glenmore St, was a pair of Red Crowned Parakeet feeding quietly and sitting on the fence rail, GPS 174.764421 -41.281950.

A shining cuckoo fledgling was being fed by a grey warbler over the back fence this morning (Mt Cook suburb).

A pair of Falcons today sitting on a bare tree branch on the Belmont Trig Bridleway. Both appeared to be adult birds. Both flew off, but returned to the tree later so it may be a favourite vantage point. GPS 174.865634 -41.191401. Also some Whiteheads in a bush with Silvereyes about 100 metres further up. Whiteheads and Bellbirds calling from near Belmont Trig.

Not exactly Wellington City, but close. This afternoon we were diving out on the west coast of Mana Island, Cook Strait, and from the boat spotted two Reef Herons flying to the cliffs at the north end of the island.
