TWO Northern Shoveler, both drakes. Just to confirm. The second bird was found while I watched the first in my scope. We both then exchanged viewing in each others scopes to confirm both birds at the same time. They were well separated out on the sea. A word of caution, there are at least three Australasian Shoveler there that have a lot of white speckling on their breasts.

1 male Northern Shoveler seen well at the tip of the shellbank and out in the bay by several birders this evening (Sat).

At least one bird still present today, a couple hours after low tide, out on the mudflats past the shell banks in front of the godwit hide. With the other shovellers.

Only one of the Northern Shovelers seen this morning. This may be due to the neap tide causing many of the ducks to be hidden behind the shingle bank.

Hi Grahame,

Do you know if anyone has seen a second bird since you first reported it? I wonder if it was just passing through? Scott and I had pretty good looks through the flock on Sunday evening but only had one.

Counted close to 70 shoveler in Te Aroha this afternoon but no Northerns--gutted!

Hello Russ,

I have not heard of anyone seeing the two since that day. The two were showed to another couple of birders on the day they were found, so its possible that inly four people saw them.
Cheers,

Grahame
