Hi Matthias, left-field suggestion is Black-fronted Tern. I think the white rump and contrasting light and dark around the face would fit.

That 2nd photo certainly looks like a BF Tern om that angle.

Picture seems to be gone, but from when I saw it last night, I'd agree with you on Black-fronted Tern.

Sorry for the confusion - I wanted to change something and therefore decided to delete the post for the time being, but I found out that this is not possible once someone has already replied. Now I have finally found the time to look into this post again.

Thanks for the feedback! I agree that Black-fronted Tern is a much better suggestion. I was fooled by the prominent dark collar and the bill which looks very thick, at least in the first photo.

We recorded four Soft-plumaged Petrels on the trip which show a similar collar and head pattern (see photos below). Maybe I was already too focused on the petrels to realize that the wings and the tail of the bird in question look completely different...
