I found this six armed Comb Star Astropecten polyacanthus today on Uretiti Beach. This is usually a five pointed starfish and I have never seen a 6-armed one before. There were many normal ones and also a lot of Luidia varia washed up at low tide after the stormy easterly weather of the weekend. The Comb Star was about 20 cm in diameter and the Luidia ranged from 25 - 40 cm in diameter.
I haven't posted photos before, so I hope this was worked.

I wonder if it used to be a 5 armed one but got injured.
Sometimes the body may think it's lost an arm and grows a new one, but the old arm is still there so it heals back.

Yeah I know, but this looks too perfect for that scenario. Think lizards & tuatara - when they regenerate their tails the regenerated part is never the same as the original. This I think is just a freak, but skimming through all the photos online of this species and not finding any other examples, a rather unusual one.
