Caravan of Stoats

Postby Threeps » Fri Dec 11, 2020 8:17 am

On our monthly Birds NZ regional field trip here in Taranaki we visited the Balsom Reserve for a spot of urban birding. The Waiwhakaiho river runs along at the edge of the reserve. While we were observing rosellas, starlings, shag and kahu, a caravan of between 5 and 7 stoats appeared on the far river bank. They made their way downstream in a rolling, bouncing, scavenging bundle in clear view of our party.

Disappointing to see this despite the intensive and otherwise successful trapping programme that is currently being undertaken in Taranaki. I have reported the sighting to Predator Free Taranaki so hopefully they will be able to focus some extra effort on this area.
