Tuataras outside ZEALANDIA fence?

Postby ZionCooper » Mon Jul 19, 2021 11:38 am

Hi all,
Just wondering if Tuataras have ever been found outside the Zealandia Predator Proof fence? I’m pretty sure they can climb and it would be interesting to know.
Thanks, Zion

Hey Zion

Yes, a few Tuatara have made it outside of the fence.

One in 2014 that was presumed to have climbed and another in 2019 that burrowed out.

It's a rare event, but when they're found they get treated if they have any injuries and are released back into the sanctuary.
