Ant predation of Paper wasp nests!

Postby flossiepip » Mon Jan 22, 2018 11:49 am

In a resent post I asked what might destroy Paper wasp nests {Paper wasp nesting success and failure!) Today it became clear that it has to be ants! Late yesterday this was a thriving nest and just this morning it is gone not an adult wasp in sight!

Sorry for the low quality images as the weather is again very poor and I am not equipped for macro photography.

That's very interesting - I wonder what species of ant they are?
I'll have to have a google and see what is known on the subject.
I guess it's also just possible that the ants didn't actually cause the failure but are just taking advantage of a nest destroyed by something else??

cheers
