IOC proposed splits

Postby Michael Szabo » Wed Mar 30, 2022 12:44 pm

The IOC is proposing the following:

Tibetan Sand Plover C. atrifrons (including pamirensis and schaeferi) is a proposed split from Siberian [Lesser] Sand Plover C. mongolus (including stegmanni) based on phenotypic differences and phylogenetic analysis which demonstrates paraphyly of these two taxa relative to Greater Sand Plover Charadrius leschenaultii (Livezey 2010; Wei et al. 2022).

Kermadec Storm Petrel Pelagodroma albiclunis is a proposed split from White-faced Storm Petrel based on consistent striking differences in plumage and tail morphology (Gill et al. 2010).

Eastern Rockhopper Penguin Eudyptes filholi is a proposed split from E. chrysocome Southern Rockhopper Penguin based on an integrative taxonomy including genetic and morphological differences and strict allopatry (Frugone et al. 2021).

Australasian Plumed Egret Ardea plumifera is a proposed split from the Asian Intermediate Egret A. intermedia on the basis of striking differences in breeding cycle soft part coloration, morphometrics, and calls (HBW/Birdlife; Rasmussen & Anderton 2012).
