Red Knot flyway evolution

Postby Ian Southey » Tue Jun 21, 2011 7:23 am

This link http://www.springerlink.com/content/uj0 ... lltext.pdf is to a paper with a lot of interesting bits of information about differences between the way different subspecies of Red Knots migrate.

One of the things he mentions is a frustration in not being able to compare migratory and non-migratory waders but in New Zealand most of our migratory wader species have populations that are also sedentary (not sure about wrybill). Maybe the migration is pretty short compared to knots but maybe this kind of thing could be followed up here.

A second take on this story revises the findings a bit. The most interesting thing to me is the hybrid origin of two of the subspecies including piersmai that is one of the subspecies that comes here. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/mec.16379
