Heraldo et al. (2024) have studied the Oceanites genus, including Wilson's Storm Petrel, and concluded that the latter should be split into two species Antarctic Storm Petrel O. exasperatus and Subantarctic O. oceanicus. The former is the taxon considered to frequent New Zealand seas.
