IOC 14.2 updates

Postby ledzep » Thu Aug 29, 2024 7:47 pm

IOC 14.2 is out with quite a number of species updates and changes https://www.worldbirdnames.org/new/updates/species-updates/. We've had one added and one removed, so no change overall, but if you've seen the Island Thrush across a number of pacific islands you may have a few new species to add. The UK now has its second endemic, with the Red Grouse split from Willow Ptarmigan.

Will the split of Grey-crowned Goldfinch from European Goldfinch affect any observations here, or are all introduced Goldfinches here the latter?

Think all our goldfinches are just British birds so would only be the species/subspecies present there but would like to hear about anything else

Looking at photos of the Grey-crowned, I think our descendants are the European Goldfinch. The Grey-crowned would look a bit different.

All the ones I've seen so far are certainly European. As you say, they look quite different. But, I've only been here 6 months, so I'm not sure if there are any Grey-crowneds around elsewhere throughout NZ.

https://www.nzbirdsonline.org.nz/specie ... -goldfinch Our birds all originated from Britain and are of the subspecies britannica. Grey-crowned goldfinches occur in Asia. There are none in NZ.

Thanks Oscar, I suspected none would be Himalayan birds, but that's exactly the info I was looking for. Cheers.
