painted fantail

Postby helinnmae » Wed Jun 05, 2019 7:53 pm

I took notes from a book by Pizzey about Australian birds, including the painted fantail. But now that I'm trying to look it up to find more about it, or find its scientific name I can't find it. Either I've written it down wrong or the name has changed (it was an older book). On Google I'm finding heaps of artwork in my searches! Any ideas of what it is? I don't want to have to get the book sent from overseas on interloan again.

Kia ora Helinmae

I don't recognise the name 'painted fantail'. My original Pizzey (1980) lists the same three fantail species as subsequent editions: grey fantail, rufous fantail and northern fantail (though willie wagtail is in the same genus). Rufous fantail Rhipidura rufifrons is the most colourful of them.
