Very interesting that the article mentions that the nearest breeding colony is in the Kermadecs. Is this actually true?

I'm afraid not; somebody would have misread this sentence from the NZBO page:
The nearest breeding colony to the Kermadec Islands is on ‘Ata (the southernmost Tongan island, 780 km to north-east), where 10,000 birds were estimated to be present in 1990.
