Bird Quiz #11

Hello everyone!

With the launch of the NZ Birds Atlas, we are more so than ever itching to get outdoors and counting those birds. Tragically, however, the weather isn't playing the game, and I am sure I'm not the only one who has been trapped inside these past few days just busting to get out looking for something special. To help keep us all sane, we're bringing back the bird quizzes! Everyone is welcome to get involved, young or old, and hopefully this provides some exciting opportunities for us all to learn and test our birding skills. All guesses stay hidden until the answer is revealed which I will do at some stage on this coming Wednesday (the 24th).

This is a bit of a last minute decision, so I haven't got any wild and wacky shorebirds or petrels to try you with just yet, but in the meantime here is an Otago resident just to give those identification abilities a stretch!

I dearly hope I'm not wrong. Stewart Island Shag? I suppose probably an Otago Shag if we are going with recent splits.

Thoroughly appreciate your revitalisation of these quizzes Michael and I look forward to the challenges that I'm sure will ensue!
For this quiz, I'll lock in Spotted Shag please.

Good evening everyone, I hope the first week back at school is treating you well!

These birds are Spotted Shags (and a cheeky Red-Billed Gull up the top), which can be separated from the reasonably similar Stewart Island - or Otago - Shags due to the grey patterning on the flanks and the greyish-brown wings, among other features.

Cheers everyone for getting involved, and I hope to get another quiz out soon!

Hi Wrybill. This quiz is a couple of years old, so it's probably not still going. I'm not sure that Michael, Liam, Oscar or George still consider themselves young birders, and might not be visiting this corner of birdingnz much. Of course, compared to the rest of us with grey hair, they will always be young.
If you want to run some more quizzes or have ideas for other things in the young birders section, I'm happy to help you set something up.
Thanks
Neil
