Spotless Crake site ?

Postby billsimpson » Wed Feb 12, 2020 9:33 am

Hi all, does anyone have a reliable site to see Spotless Crake around the Auckland area please ?
I am arriving Auckland March 11th and departing from Tauranga on 13th and am hiring a car for those few days so can drive a fair distance if necessary.
I would like to see and photo one well but most ebird records seem to be heard only.
Thanks

Hi Bill

Skakespeare Regional Park (Whangaparoa Peninsular) is good for Spotless Crake. As you enter predator proof gate turn right and head down to open water with exposed mud. Crakes are in this area and can be see early morning, late afternoon.

cheers

Great, thanks Erik, I will head straight there.
Looking at Google Earth street view I can see a car park at the Predator proof gate and a small pool c40m to the south-west which looks like your site.
Thanks for the reply..much appreciated.
Cheers
Bill
