See this about a storm-blew Barn owl grubbed a NZ kingerfisher and flew away in West Auckland.

Hello Clinton
As per my comment on this topic in Bird Sightings & Alerts, the report of the Kingfisher being grabbed by a Barn Owl is rather questionable. It's hard to imagine a Ruru or a Barn Owl doing that ! It also did not have anything to do with a storm.

Storm weathered/ damaged birds are much easier prey. I think this a possibility. Many UK owls although predominately sticking to their favourite prey will take a variety and are always on the look out for easy meal. Tawny owls in UK have been seen in harvested fields eating grass grubs on the ground.
