I was in the Huntly/Rangiriri area for the day, and while fog was pretty thick until lunchtime, still managed some fun birds including 2 white heron (1 near the Tainui bridge in Huntly, 1 in the pond off Ralph Rd), a rook in Huntly, and best of all--a juv Black-billed Gull following a Caspian Tern around on the Waikato River. Lots of Canada Geese around as usual, and ended up with 51 species for the day which surprised me a bit considering I only had 2 hours of non-foggy birding time. Was happy to relax at home for the sunny afternoon/evening.
Sounds like a lot of people got out and enjoyed themselves and over 100 species recorded for NZ collectively (and close to 6,000 world wide!)
