Oystercatcher Building Tauranga

Postby Cardinal15 » Thu Sep 15, 2022 2:17 pm

I have noticed this building once or twice and it seems to always have oystercatchers on it. Nice easy birdwatching site but I wonder why they seem to pick only this building among the rest of the buildings. Any ideas? The building is Baybat Batteries on Turret Road.

This is a regular roost and as such is counted during our regular BirdsNZ shorebird surveys. The most likely explanation is that the birds are roosting on old high tide roost spots that now contain buildings. Another roost is on Port of Tauranga land at the very end of the public access at Sulphur Point , another near the Dry Dock stacker nearby and at and a more widely known one on a mall roof at Thames. Both Oystercatchers and Godwits employ these methods.
