What exact census are you talking about Wrybill?
Unless the census is a specific group of people or only in a specific area/date it’s likely that anyone can participate.
The places you listed are some pretty good spots.
Happy Birding,
Sam

Hi Wrybill, the annual wader counts are done by BirdsNZ, either 2 or 3 times a year.
I expect the Nelson/Tasman winter wader count has already happened as they are mostly done at midwinter on a suitable tide that makes it easier to count birds at high tide roosts. Look at the website for www.birdsnz.org.nz and contact the RR [regional rep] for Nelson and you may be able to go with someone to help you id. waders at those places, on an informal basis.

If you feel like counting shorebirds, there is also the Global Shorebird Counts (which seems to get less attention in NZ). It's in September every year around World Shorebird Day (6 September).
