Fluttering Shearwaters

Postby lloydesler » Sun Jul 24, 2022 4:57 pm

HI folks, Beach Patrol records coming in point to a fairly sizeable Fluttering shearwater wreck over the past few weeks - West Coast, Wellington coast and up to Hawkes Bay. Keep a record of dead birds whenever you are visiting a beach and sent to me or via the OSNZ homepage. This is the note I send to people posting dead seabirds on iNaturalist.... 'Thanks for posting this. The Ornithological Society has been keeping records of dead birds on beaches for 60 years. I am the coordinator of this. This helps us understand bird migration, epidemics and changing populations. If anyone wants to help with this long-running citizen science project there is an online form on the birds nz website under Research then National Schemes, or I can post you record cards or you can email details to me about species and numbers with photos of any you don't know.
