*Piako Wader Roost CLOSED* (Until April)

Postby RussCannings » Fri Nov 18, 2022 11:49 am

Hi all,

Some of you may have already noticed this but since about a week ago, the Piako wader roost (Shelly Beach Rd, near Kopu/Thames) has been closed due to dyke construction. I recently received some helpful insight from Ken George who says, "Apparently that location is now closed to the public because of heavy machinery working on the stopbank remediation, and it will be for some time, Keith Woodley (From Pukorokoro/Miranda) was talking about it not being opened back up again until ~March/April. At that point the dam that's built up will be opened and the plain will be flooded from the river as part of the plan to develop it as a permanent shorebird roost. The swing gate entrance from Shelly Beach Rd is closed and locked now (the Pukorokoro group having permission to enter)."

--In other words, if you are interested in visiting this site, please contact the Miranda Shorebird Centre for possible group visits. Otherwise, it is closed to the public (and with the stopbank, it's not possible to see the roosting birds from the public road unless birds are roosting in the adjacent fields).

Miranda remains open of course! :)

Russs
