Hi all
Just thought I'd share some news about The Petrel Station seabird trips. Back in 2017 I started these trips with a keen interest in learning about seabirds - since then they've evolved to become one of the best pelagic seabird day trips in New Zealand, and the world, and have recorded some very impressive at-sea seabird sighting results, which in turn has added greatly to seabird movements and distribution knowledge in northern New Zealand.
I couldn’t be happier, and the whole research aspect of the trips really interests and excites me ... So I've decided to expand the trips to become a proper long term, at-sea, seabird sightings research project aiming to identify distinct year-round and seasonal trends in the occurrence and diversity of seabird species present in the area (local, migratory and vagrant), and will look for any variations occurring (due the climate changes, fisheries etc) over the course of this project (15+ years).
To get a complete year-round picture I'm planning to get trips out more regularly with the aim for 3 trips p/month. This will be double the trips from last year and the ultimate goal is to have all trips go ahead – so along with people paying to come out on the seabird trips, I’ll also be seeking additional funding via grants, donations (via our Givealittle page - www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/thepetrelstation ) and corporate support, which will help avoid any shortfalls, and ensure the research project can achieve its long-term goals.
I'm also planning to start a youth initiative to allow students studying relevant academic fields to come out to The Petrel Station at a reduced cost (& ultimately free). As soon as funding can be sourced I'd like to implement this opportunity as I’d love this as part of the project.
I've just launched a very comprehensive website to help promote The Petrel Station trips further with lots of info about the the research and support, as well as the seabirds we see and trip details etc. It's pretty awesome so go check it out at:
www.thepetrelstation.nz
Also I've just added lots of new pelagic seabird trip dates for winter and spring, right through to the end of 2023. You can check out the new trip dates in this forums 'Birding Trips and Events' section or at www.thepetrelstation.nz/upcoming-trips.
Cheers

Hi Scott
Your new website is fantastic and definitely makes you want to go on more pelagics. Might be an idea to place it on sightings/alerts page as well.
cheers

SAVE $50 ON ANY WINTER PETREL STATION SEABIRD TOUR!
To celebrate the new website we're knocking $50 off the price of all our winter 2023 pelagic seabird tours out to The Petrel Station.
There's a bunch of winter seabird tour dates from 2nd June through to 4th September 2023, so check out the website for upcoming winter dates:
www.thepetrelstation.nz
The winter months are when the albatross and a mix of southern seabirds come north up to our area, and we’ve had some real winter rarities show up. Past visitors have included Blue Petrel, Pink-footed Shearwater, 4 Prion species to name a few so there’s no telling what could turn up. The local winter breeding seabirds are also around in good numbers as well. The best way to experience these seabirds is out on the ocean, in their world, so get in touch if you’re keen for a great day out with some stunning seabirds. Tours depart from Tutukaka, in northern New Zealand.
The offer is for a limited time on any winter booking up until 23.06.23, so make sure you get yourself a deal.
Cheers
