Re: Weka
Weka are an interesting bird as they have appaeared and disappeared in a puzzling manner in different places at different times. It should be a fascinating project.
The most obvious single source is Oliver 1955 "New Zealand Birds" - the second edition. Although you may need to re-think his discussion on causes in light of what we have learned the dates will all be good. You may need to find a bigger library or an older birder to get access to a copy.
If you're really keen try searching on Papers Past. You will probably have to sort through a lot of crap but you will get some very good information too. I'd guess the disappearance date to be somewhere around World War 1 (1914-18) and it is often said toi have coincided with the Spanish Flu Epidemic (1918) but I have seen dates as early as 1913 (Hunua Ranges). Also search the Notornis archives.
You might find some records from before the main disappearance here if you find the section on native birds and look at the questionaire results https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/books ... #image-tab
This one might help a bit more but I couldn't find it on the internet - maybe another reason to visit a good library. MYERS, J.G. 1923. The present position of the endemic birds of New Zealand. New Zealand Journal of Science and Technology 6: 65-99.
Good luck, Ian.
