Tiritiri Matangi Arctic Skuas

Postby OwenM » Fri Oct 25, 2024 6:31 pm

Hi All, I am Owen Mikosza, A very passionate 11yo birder. I am very happy to now be part of this community and hope to contribute a lot. My question is regarding a tiritiri matangi trip I have planned for the 27th October. I have a list of target species which I think are all very getable apart from 1, Arctic Skuas. On Ebird most sightings are from mid November onwards, although I heard they migrate here in September. Is it too early for them? Also I’m not planning to bring my scope so will have to rely on the ferry ride there to spot them.
The other target species on the list are Kōkako, Rifleman, Fernbird, Bullers And Flesh footed shearwater, 1 native skink, 1 native gecko, common Dolphin and tuatara. If anyone has any info on the other species whereabouts and likelihood of me finding them it would be very much appreciated :D

Update: Got great Views of Kōkako, Moko Skink and bottlenose Dolphin, and brief views of riflemen, but dipped on Fernbird, Flesh footed and Bullers shearwater, Common Dolphin, Arctic Skua and geckos. Next time I’ll probably stay the night on the island which will hopefully give me enough time to get the rest of the species
