Hi there, good to see them breeding at the lake, really shows how much pest trapping is making an impact! I have observed them on this lake before, generally 1 or 2 pairs. They are also breeding at Shakespear in good numbers now :)

It is especially pleasing for me as I have been running the trap line round the course for about 10 years now, there are several storm ponds and I have seen Pateke on all of them. My bird list for the course now stands at 55 species, so yes the trapping on the peninsular is having a great influence on bird sightings.

That’s really good that you have taken on checking the trap lines around the course, getting involved in community pest control is one of my goals. 55 Species for the course is amazing! Would it be possible for you to list them along with some small details, for example your high count for the course or how many times you have seen them? Also have you seen any grass carp in the ponds there recently? I have gone looking for them quite a few times to no avail. I heard the ones in the canals mostly died but there might still be some in the lakes. If you have spotted them it would be useful to know the location as I would be really keen to check them out!

I have not seen any grass carp since the lake was netted but time will tell, working on the bird list.
